This week while working in genius hour we searched to find out what we wanted to show in our presentation. Such as things to talk about and data to share. We decided we were going to include our video we made the day of the drive. We also were going to find a way to include our beginning goal and how we exceeded it. We made a rough draft on what we wanted on each slide. We wrote all this out on a paper and cannot wait to make it into a presentation! This week we heard back from the Red Cross associate and she asked if we wanted to host two more drives in February and May. We told her we would love to and we checked with the facility again to see what days would work best for them. We are excited to continue our Blood Drive journey!
This week on genius hour we worked on some post blood drive things. We sent out an email thanking everyone who gave blood at the drive. We also informed the donors between age 18-21 that they would be receiving a 10$ gift card via email for donating. We also thanked everyone that volunteered and we thanked the faculty at the facility that we used. We also heard back from the Red Cross association that we had 28 eligible donations that can be used. We exceeded our goal of 25 donations! The next step in our genius hour journey is to get all of our data together and put it into a presentation form!
The blood drive is finally here. We helped set up tables and a social distanced waiting area for our donors to wait in while they were waiting to give blood. We checked people in and gave them a nametag, while our volunteers for the snack table gave them a snack when they were finished. Overall we had a successful drive with 35 people showing up and 29 qualified to give blood. We only had two people pass out which is good. We viewed short clips throughout the day and that will be part of our final product. We hope to continue doing more blood drives in the future to help more people.
One more week until our blood drive. We are so excited and cannot wait to see the outcome. All of our volunteers are ready and everything is in order. We are still at 21 participants though so we sent out emails to all the principals in the county asking them to please tell their staff. We have already gotten emails back from a couple of them saying that they informed them and wishing us "good luck". We have gotten emails from several teachers already and now we are up to 28 participants. We have reached our goal of 25! We can't wait to see everyone next week.
We are now two weeks away from the blood drive! This week we sent out emails to our donors asking them to please recruit more people because we are still at twenty-one. In the email we alerted them that we are now two weeks away and can't wait to see them all their donating for a good cause.
We also made another thing to post and posted it on our stories. This time we asked our friends to repost the post to hopefully reach other people that have not found out about our blood drive yet. If people ages 16-24 donate then they get a $10 gift card in their email. We need younger people to donate, so hopefully by our friends reposting we will alert more people. This week we recruited quite a few more people for our blood drive. We even recruited people from an hour away and they are going to donate. We are putting together the rest of the things we need to have more people to sign up. The week before we are going to hang more flyers up in Advance, to hopefully get more people from the other side of the county.
We also recruited people to work the snack table for when people are done giving blood. We posted on our social media's again asking people to sign up. We know have 21 people signed up which is four less than our goal! So far everything for our blood drive has gone very smoothly. This week we worked out signing more people up and looking over some of the paperwork we have to fill out the day of the blood drive. We also met with the blood drive coordinator briefly and she gave us more posters to give out and hang up.
Looking through some of the paperwork she gave us it talked about POWER RED. We learned that this is when you give blood and it separates red blood cells from blood components. This is recommended for some blood types. When you're giving blood this process also takes longer than the usual process. Another part of the paperwork is a consent form for 16 year olds from their parents. We didn’t know about this so now we will have to make sure all of our friends get this form filled out. The rest of the paper work consisted of guidelines and regulations for giving blood. Such as height, weight and if you're on certain medications. We received an email back from Davie Enterprise and were featured in Friday’s run of the paper, for knowing the importance of veterans and wanting to honor them for holding our blood drive on veterans day. This week for our blood drive we sent out an email to Mr.Mike with the Davie county enterprise, we requested him to put a section in the enterprise for our Blood Drive. We have him the information for where and when the Blood Drive was. We also linked to our flyer and a picture of us together. We are hoping this could help us reach out to the older community that more veterans are included in.
We also sent out emails to our registered donors to see if they can help us recruit more people by telling their friends and family about the Blood Drive. We have eleven people signed up at the moment and some from past experience in helping with a drive many people tend to sign up the week of or just come in as walk ins. On our website we added a button on the bottom of our homepage that directly linked from our website to the Red Cross website where you can sign up and choose a time. This way people can fill in all their information themselves and not have to go through us first. We are hoping this could help the process run smoother. One factor we have been talking about is how we need 1-2 volunteers to help at the snack table. The person that is there just sits there and offers donors food and makes sure that they dont pass out. We started asking some people if they would be willing to volunteer because we know a lot of club members need volunteer hours. Below is a picture of us working. This week we went through the Red Cross page and sent out emails to all of the people who have signed up for our blood drive. The email talked about how donating blood helps save peoples lives and how donors make a difference. It also has a note from us thanking the people for signing up and supporting us. Lastly it gives the date, the appointment time, the site, address, and room name. We went and set up flyers all around Mocksville. The places we set up the flyers at were The Station, Davie community park, Craft store, Ketchie Creek, Village Inn, Piece of Mind Consignment, Tractor Supply, East Coast Wings, 601 Burgers and Brews, and Blaise Baptist Church were we are having our blood drive. We are planning on sending out the emails about every 2 to 3 weeks to remind people.
